Hattie’s

To start: A blue cheese cheesecake, with strawberry jam and peach on top of ablueberry crostini. If that doesn’t tempt you, I don’t know what will. Recently, a friend and I went over to Hattie’s in the Bishop Arts District for a quick dinner and found ourselves in food heaven with this to die for appetizer. I know what you are thinking cheesecake as an appetizer? Well, that is what we were thinking too and found ourselves pleasantly surprised with the combination of sweet and savory flavors combined and accented with the twist of blue cheese.

Next: An entree of bacon wrapped quail on top a bed of sweet potato mash and collared greens.  A southern combination cooked to perfection and savory with every bite. The quail was balanced perfectly by the crispy wrapped bacon creating a mouth watering flavor with every bite.

Chicken Scratch and The Foundry

Park in the gravel parking lot and meander down an old, grey, brick walkway.  Pass a stage made of old shipping pallets on your left and be transformed as you walk into an open area picnic style area with an old time, hipster laid-back feel.

Chicken Scratch and The Foundry, right next door to each other, were started by the co-owners of Smoke.  Chicken Scratch is an a-la carte style, family restaurant and The Foundry, a bar.  Walk into Chicken Scratch and order at the counter, from the simple but delicious menu. Want a whole or a half chicken? Fried or rotisserie? Sauce? Sides? Every piece of chicken is to die for, tender, juicy, delicious. The skin is deliciously crispy and cooked perfectly. This down home cooking chicken restaurant has an unforgettable atmosphere, almost as unforgettable as their amazing chicken dishes. P.S. Don’t forget to get one of their homemade popsicles!

FORTY FIVE TEN

There is nothing I love more than a ‘ladies lunch’ and when thinking of a ‘ladies lunch’ FORTY FIVE TEN is the perfect place.  Recently, a few friends and I moseyed on over to this cozy T-Room for a ‘ladies lunch’ of a lifetime.  Located inside of the FORTY FIVE TEN store, the restaurant decor is bright and airy and the menu is delicious.  You know when you look at a menu and cannot decide what you want because everything looks so good? Well, this is the case.  From Panini’s to Salads, there is not one item on the menu that will leave you dissatisfied.

My personal favorite is the Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad, pecan crusted chicken sliced and laid a top a bed of mixed greens, sprinkled with dried cranberries (yum) and  Boursin cheese and drizzled with an herb vinaigrette. A perfect amount of dressing is used, the chicken is deliciously tender and the combination of all the ingredients pops in your mouth leaving you wanting more.

Dive

Are you looking for a healthy, quick and satisfying lunch? Then head on over to Dive, located in Snider Plaza.  The menu offers an array of salad, wrap and sandwich options. Each dish is made fresh and offers something a little out of the ordinary.  Dive takes seafood and invents the most filling and satisfying dishes with an unexpected twist, like the Seared Ahi Tuna wrap, filled with ahi tuna, coconut rice, ginger slaw, cucumber, and avocado with a chili-ponzu sauce. If you are a seafood lover, Dive is the place for you. But don’t worry, they have options for the non-fish lovers as well. Try the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich or the Grilled Churrasco Steak Wrap.

A PERSONAL FAVORITE: The Shrimp Curry Salad. A bed of spinach, topped with shrimp and covered in a creamy curry dressing. Satisfying, fresh, innovative and delicious.

The Cedars Social

Located on South Lamar, The Cedars Social has a cozy, eclectic and retro atmosphere. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you have been brought back to the seventies with printed chairs and retro furniture pieces dispersed throughout the restaurant. The room is brought together by a large circular fireplace with a very cool looking vent hanging directly above. The Cedars Social is famous for their drink menu, handcrafted by Barmen Michael Martensen. Specialty drinks include Tequila Por Mi Amante made of Strawberry Don Julio Silver, lemon juice, cane syrup, and club soda or Rio Star Rush fixed up with Plantation rum, falernium, orgeat syrup, grapefruit juice and angostura bitters. The menu, crafted by Chef John Tesar and Kyle McClelland has appetizers that will blow you away! In the mood for fried oysters on the half shell or the miniature meatballs? The answer is yes because once you try these there is no looking back. And don’t forget to order dessert. The Cedars Social offers some one of a kind desserts like a “Kit-Kat” bar shaped piece of chocolate heaven filled with nutella and chocolate moose. Dessert doesn’t get much better than that.

Patrizio

Did you know that Patrizio’s in Highland Park Village is now serving breakfast? Saturday and Sunday’s from 9 am to noon. Their breakfast menu is simple, delicious and cheap. Portions are huge and guaranteed to leave you satisfied. In the mood for an omelet? Try their Frittata Del Fattore, an omelet with wild mushroom, chicken, bell pepper and mozzarella. Feel like building something of your own? What about a savory crepe with ham and cheese or something sweet like chocolate hazelnut or cherries.

Patrizio’s is the perfect restaurant for any meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner and I must say it is one of my favorites. The outside patio is airy and green.  It is the perfect place to sit for a long lunch on a brisk sunny day with friends or family. Patrizio’s continuously serves up that kind of italian comfort food that we all crave. Whether you are in the mood for some ravioli, veal picatta or spaghetti and meat balls, Patrizio’s will leave you perfectly satisfied and anticipating what you will order on your next visit. Oh yes! and Don’t forget to order the garlic cheese bread. (If the name doesn’t say enough, I don’t know what will)
